May Students of the Month (5/15/15) Congratulations to our May students of the month! Great job, Liam Welch (7th Gr.), Baylee Young (7th Gr.), Elizabeth Stewart (4th Gr.), and Soren Aukamp (2nd Gr.)!
Reading Counts Outing (5/12/15) Below are photos of some of the students who took part in the Reading Counts outing at the Pepsi Ice Center in Bloomington. Students earned their way for this outing by achieving the Reading Counts goal set for each grade level.
Courthouse Visit (5/6/15) While some of the 5th - 8th grade students were participating in the Logan County Track Meet, those remaining at school paid a brief visit to the Logan County Courthouse. Students walked around the grounds and the three floors of the courthouse, taking in the building's art, architecture, and history. District Judge Workman was kind enough to spend some time with the students and explain the functions of the district court.
Students of the Month (4/21/15) Congratulations to our April Students of the Month: Kelsey Marten (2nd Gr.), Donavin Sapp (4th Gr.), Isaiah Wahab (6th Gr.), and Bryson Beccue (7th Gr.). Great job!
Thanks to School Club (4/23/15) I'd like to express my appreciation to School Club for its continued investment in Carroll Catholic School. Recently, School Club agreed to cover the cost of the new Geography textbook series we will begin using in 5th and 6th grades next school year. This is yet another example of School Club, your parents' organization, helping to enable the success of the students and mission of Carroll Catholic School. Thank you, School Club!
Coaches & Sponsors (3/19/15) As we have now begun our final sports and activities of the year, we'd like to express our appreciation to our coaches and sponsors. Coaching at the elementary level requires patience, energy, and a lot of time. And these efforts often go unseen. Athletics and activities are an important part of the school experience, but they wouldn't be possible without the willingness of many dedicated individuals. Thank you, coaches and sponsors!

Trivia Night (2/27/15) Carroll
Catholic School will host its second annual trivia night on Saturday, April 4,
to benefit Carroll/New Holland-Middletown/Zion Lutheran athletics and
extracurriculars. It’s a great way to meet other CCS families and those
involved in our athletics cooperative. While your child may not yet be
involved in school athletics, hopefully they will be one day, and this is
another great fundraiser to help sustain our excellent extracurricular
programs.
Even if you don't consider yourself a trivia buff, please join us for an evening of great fun! Feel free to bring dinner (pizza, carry out, picnic, etc.) for your table prior to trivia. Table snacks will be provided. We look forward to seeing you at Trivia Night!

February Students of the Month (2/13/15) Our February students of the month are Aidan Alaniz (4th grade), Lilly Evers (1st grade), Andrew Graue (5th grade), and Jayden Graham (7th grade). Congratulations to these students!
Civil War Presentation (1/29/15) Seventh and eighth grade social studies students were treated to a presentation on Civil War weapons by Troy Hanger. The students learned about a Kentucky long rifle, similar to what Confederate soldiers would have used, a Union musket that had been used in the Civil War by Mr. Hanger's great-great uncle, and a Navy service revolver, favored by many Union officers. The students had a lot of excellent questions for Mr. Hanger and learned a great deal in this firsthand experience. Thank you, Mr. Hanger!
Sad News (1/19/15) The Carroll Catholic School family was deeply saddened by the passing of TJ Cosgrove on Sunday, January 18. TJ was a great supporter of the school, serving most recently as a member of the Education Commission and as organizer of the CCS Drawdown. TJ put a great amount of time and energy into the Drawdown, such that it became the school's most prosperous fundraiser. TJ cared about the Drawdown because he cared about the school. In addition, through his work with the Elk's Charitable Trust, TJ helped the school secure a classroom set of iPads. TJ was a great friend to Carroll Catholic School, and he will be missed. On behalf of the school community, I would like to offer our sympathies to TJ's wife, Susan, his children, Jeff and Beth, and to his entire family.
Honor Roll (1/15/15) Congratulations to those students making the honor roll for the second quarter. I encourage them, and all CCS students, to remain focused for second semester and to maintain high academic standards for yourself.
The breakdown for honor roll is High Honors with a grade point average of 4.75-5.0, Honors from 4.5 to 4.74, and Honorable Mention from 4.0 to 4.49.

Advent Collection (1/14/15) Thank you for the generosity shown by Carroll School families during Advent. $188 in spare change was collected by students, and this money will be used to benefit the students and mission of St. Thomas School in Tanzania. Over the past two years, CCS families have collected $1,742 during Advent and Lent for St. Thomas School.
Engineering Visit (1/8/15) The 7th and 8th Grade Science classes enjoyed a visit
from Miss Katie McGrew. Katie is a Senior Mechanical Engineering student
at the University of Illinois. Katie spoke to the class about her experiences
as an engineering student. Katie has wanted to study engineering since
completing an English assignment, "My Future Career," in 7th grade.
Katie is a big fan of "Star Wars" and she explained how this
fascination got her interested in space exploration. She completed an
internship with Northrop Grumman, an aerospace engineering firm in Los Angeles,
CA, last summer, and has accepted a position with them upon graduation. It was
great for the students to hear her advice which included:
* Go to a fun engineering week long summer camp!
* Try and do a job shadow with someone who does something that you might like to do.
* Join out of school activities like a robotics club, science club, or math team.
* Make sure to pay attention in math and science class.
* If you don’t understand something ASK FOR HELP.
* And most importantly HAVE FUN!!
Thank you to Ms. McGrew for coming to share these STEM topics with us!

Pink Envelopes (12/29/14) If you are a member of Holy Family Parish, you may have noticed the pink envelope in your monthly offertory envelopes. This envelope is another way you can directly support the mission of Carroll Catholic School. The monetary offering made with this pink envelope is used for student scholarships, so that all children, regardless of family income, may have access to the spiritual and educational benefits of a Catholic education.
Merry Christmas! (12/19/14) On behalf of the students and staff of Carroll Catholic School, may your Christmas be blessed and your new year be healthy and prosperous.
December Students of the Month (12/3/14) Carroll Catholic School students of the month for December are (L-R) Rachel Morrow (4th gr.), Elias Alaniz (1st gr.), Savannah Welch (5th gr.), and Ashley Nguyen (6th gr.). Congratulations!
5th & 6th Grade STEM Train (11/17/14) As part of the school's increased focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum, 5th and 6th grade students take part in STEM Train activities. Photos from these hands-on activities can be seen at Mrs. Allen's weebly page at ccsmrsallen.weebly.com and click on the 5th & 6th Grade Science tab.
Veterans Day Prayer Service (11/11/14) Carroll Catholic School students recognized Veterans Day with a prayer service, held at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The prekindergarten class served as color guard. Several students with family members who are veterans or active military helped to lead the service. The students offered prayers for America's veterans and for peace in our communities and our world. CCS also recognized Holy Family Parish priest, Father Jeffrey Laible, for his service as a military chaplain. After the service, Aaron Johnston of the Air National Guard visited the second grade classroom.
November Students of the Month (11/4/14): Congratulations to Drew Singleton (8th gr.), Lauren Graue (7th gr.), Walker Allen (4th gr.), and Reece Winebrinner (2nd gr.) for being named students of the month for November!
Piano Recital (11/1/14) The slideshow below shows some of Ms. Myre's piano students entertaining Carroll students and families at a lunchtime recital.
Mayor's Visit (11/4/14) Lincoln mayor Keith Snyder visited with the 7th and 8th grade social studies class. The mayor provided students with an overview of Lincoln city government and the role of the mayor. He then answered the many questions that students had, ...from, "How much are you paid?" ($12,000 -- same salary since 1960) to "Why do the traffic lights on the square always blink?" (very costly to replace lights and poles -- some will be changed to stop signs) to "When will the new movie theater be finished?" (hopefully by the Art & Balloon Fest 2015). Thank you to Mayor Snyder for taking the time to visit with our students.
CCS Draw Down (10/30/14) The CCS Draw Down benefits the students and the mission of Carroll Catholic School. In addition to the benefit to the school, the night of the Draw Down has meant a lot of fun and fellowship, a great meal, and a chance to leave a little ri...cher than when you arrived.

STEM Flight (10/21/14) Students in Mrs. Allen's 7th and 8th grade science class completed the first of the new STEM modules: Flight. Over the course of the unit, students learned about the history and science of flight and rocketry, and took part in computer simulations involving the International Space Station. They then applied what they learned to the construction of their own rockets. Students launched their rockets, striving for both height and distance, as well as accuracy.
Mrs. Allen is to be commended for her enthusiasm and dedication, as she skillfully led students through this challenging, hands-on curriculum, which incorporated all aspects of STEM: science, technology, engineering, and math.

Speech Team (10/20/14) Congratulations to the speech team for it’s showing at the Logan County Tournament on Saturday, October 18. The CCS/NHM team earned seven #1 and six #2 decisions, as well as three of the four judges choice awards. Great job speech team and Coach Robison!
A Big Top Thank You (10/17/14) The Carroll Carnival was held on last Sunday, October 12, and was great fun for all who attended. I'd like to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors, to those who helped plan and set up for the carnival, and to the many CCS students, families, and staff members who volunteered at the carnival. The day wouldn't have been the success that is was without the time and energy of everyone involved!
Sponsors and donors included: Marquez Family, Deneke Family, Greg Morrow Family, Slack/Spangler Family, Scott Singleton Family, Craig/Schilling Family, Pat French, Melanie Welch Counseling, American Septic Professionals, Bottrell Farms Trucking, Davenport Family, Wal-Mart, CVS, and several anonymous donors. Thank you also to those involved in the planning and set-up: Bonnie Frawley, Bob and Will Buse, Rusty and Jennifer Craig (with a special thank you to CCS student Zachary Craig who contacted local stores for many of the soda 2-liters used in the ring toss game), Bussy and Colleen Roate, James and Tiffany Reed, and Melanie Welch, who also put in many extra hours as carnival coordinator.

National School Lunch Week (10/16/14) During National School Lunch Week, I'd like to recognize the great work that Kathy Buse does as the head of our school cafeteria. Mrs. Buse works very hard to prepare meals that are popular with students and nutritious. She cares about the students and this shows in the time and effort she puts into each meal every day. Thank you, Mrs. Buse!

Eaton Contribution (9/30/14) Thank you to the Eaton Corporation and the Lincoln Eaton plant for their $1,000 donation to Carroll Catholic School! The funds will be used to further enhance STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum offered to third to eighth grade students. Eaton Corporation is to be commended for contributing to the continued improvement of education in Lincoln.
St. Jude Donation (9/22/14) Another CCS student is to be commended for his generous spirit. Dravin Tierney recently celebrated his 13th birthday. He invited 5th to 8th grade students to his party and, in place of gifts for himself, asked that gifts be purchased for patients at St. Jude Children's Hospital. Over thirty toys, movies, and games will be given to the hospital to be distributed to patients at Christmas. Great job, Dravin!
Library Donation (9/8/14) A huge thank you to fifth graders Jake Curry and Alena Reed for their donation of books to the school library! Jake and Alena celebrated a combined birthday party and asked their friends to donate books to the library instead of gifts. Thank you Jake and Alena for thinking of your school!
Rockin for Rockford (8/29/14) Because of the generosity of the Carroll School community, we are able to contribute $846.25 to the Rockin for Rockford fund. Hopefully, this will benefit in a small way Steve and Tammie Rockford and family as they continue to deal with ALS.
I appreciate as always the generous spirit of the Carroll Catholic School family. Thank you.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (8/22/14) CCS students and staff took part in the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge, but we opted for a fire truck instead of a bucket. Thanks to LFD for the use of the truck. The funds raised by the challenge will go to the Steve Rockford family. Steve, a former teacher and coach at Southeast High School in Springfield, is battling ALS. The Carroll Catholic School family has the Rockford Family in its thoughts and prayers.
CCS challenged school parents Michael Block of the Logan County Sheriff's Department, Paul Adams of the Lincoln Police Department, and James Reed of the Lincoln Fire Department to take the Ice Bucket Challenge!

Welcome Back! (8/22/14) On behalf of the faculty and staff of Carroll Catholic School, I'd like to welcome our families and students to school for what I know will be a great year. I have high expectations for this school year, with the additions of Mrs. Zaffiri in kindergarten and Mrs. Miller in music, continued improvements to our primary grades reading curriculum, Saxon Math for 5th and 6th grade, and an increased focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) in science class for grades 3-8.
Thank you to our families for entrusting the education and spiritual development of your children to Carroll School. Together we make the Carroll Catholic School family great.

The Benefits of Handwriting (6/5/14) I wanted to pass along a link to an interesting article in the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/03/science/whats-lost-as-handwriting-fades.html?_r=1). The article details the benefits derived by children who continue to practice and perfect handwriting in school--benefits particularly tied to the assimilation and recall of information. While it is important that students develop competency in keyboarding, regular use of handwriting still offers a benefit to students, as well. At Carroll, students are instructed in handwriting through fourth grade, and, through eighth grade, they are consistently required to engage in hand written work.
Bowling to Schools Grant (6/2/14) Carroll Catholic School was the recipient of a $1,000 grant through the Bowling to Schools program. The unspecified grant funds will be used to help cover costs of playground equipment to be installed this summer. Thank you to Shawn Taylor, owner of Logan Lanes, for assistance in securing this grant.
