Market Day (5/21/14) I'd like to thank all those who place orders through the Market Day fundraiser. Because of you, the school earned $1,542 this year, and since CCS began working with Market Day in 1996, over $68,000 has been raised for the school. A special thank you to Debbie Edwards and School Club for their active roles in Market Day.
Brock Endres Memorial Award (5/21/14)
Congratulations to Alice Roate on receiving the 2014 Brock Endres Memorial Award!
(4/14/14) This is the first year for the Brock Endres Memorial Award. This award was established to recognize the achievements and the potential of a Carroll Catholic School 8th grade student. This annual award will be given in memory of Brock Endres, a 2007 Carroll graduate, who passed away in March 2013. Like this year's award recipient, Brock exhibited both great achievement and potential.
The recipient of the award will receive a $500 I-Series U.S. savings bond. It is hoped that the bond will be redeemed and used toward the cost of a college education or a career opportunity after high school.
A committee will select the recipient based upon his or her application in the form of a 500-word personal statement. The award recipient will be announced at the 8th grade graduation awards ceremony. Special thanks go to Greg and Peggy Morrow and family and the Knights of Columbus Council #1250.

retiring at the end of this school year. Mr. Kocka has been a fixture at
CCS for 40 years, serving as a science, social studies, and PE teacher, coach
for boys athletics, athletic director, and 8th grade homeroom
teacher. During his time at Carroll, Mr. Kocka has instructed and
enlightened thousands of students and spent untold (often thankless) hours in
the gym, on the baseball field, or at the track. He helped to build a
competitive, enduring athletics program. His contributions to Carroll
Catholic School are many, and he will be missed.
I’d like to thank Mr. Kocka for all that he has done, and continues to do, for Carroll Catholic School. You may express your sentiments and well wishes to Mr. Kocka when you see him at the school or by contacting him at [email protected].

Volleyball Good Deed (2/26/14) I'd like to commend the players and parents of the CCS/NHM volleyball team for their efforts last night on behalf of Kaylee Helton. Kaylee is an NHM graduate and a member of last year's VB team. She has been dealing with very serious medical issues this school year. The VB team held a bake sale and 50/50 drawing to benefit Kaylee and raised over $350. Good work, ladies and Coach Feldman and Coach Fitzpatrick!

Kid Knits (1/9/14) As a service project during Advent, CCS students in grades fifth to eighth knitted hats through the Kid Knits program. Each student knitted two hats: one to keep and one to give to someone in need. In the course of the project, students learned about global poverty and of the women's cooperatives in Chile and Rwanda who produced the yarn used in the hats. One of our eighth graders, Anthony Brummett, took the hats and passed them out at St. John's Breadline in Springfield, where he and his family were volunteering on Christmas Eve. Thank you, Anthony, and thanks to all of our middle school students and Mrs. Fuiten for your efforts on behalf of others!
A special thank you also to School Club for purchasing the loom kits and yarn for this valuable project!

Partners In Education Plaque (12/11/13) There is now a plaque hanging outside of my office to recognize those who have contributed at least $250 to the Partners In Education (PIE) program. I would like to again say thank you to these donors and to all who have contributed to PIE since it was started in November 2011. In those two years, over $62,000 has been contributed and 44 projects or items have been funded. Our school is better equipped and, more importantly, our children's education has been greatly enhanced.

Christmas Gifts for Jesus (12/10/13) The diocese's newspaper, The Catholic Post, posed this question to 2nd graders: "What Christmas gift would you give to Jesus, and why would you want him to have this gift?" The wisdom and compassion of our 2nd graders show in their responses:
"I would give Jesus a toy because he is nice and kind."
"I would give Jesus a crib made with love. He needs a crib."
"I would give Jesus my time for Christmas. I would go to church, sing to him, and teach people about him because he loves you and me."
"I would give Jesus a blanket because he needs to be warm."
"I would give Jesus a crib because he does not have a crib. I love Jesus so much!"
"I would give Jesus a sign that said 'me + you = love.' I would give him that because it came from my heart."

CCS Drawdown (11/25/13) A huge thank you to T.J. Cosgrove, Charlie Williams, Nan Lockenauer, and Jennifer Craig for all of their work on another successful Drawdown this past Friday! These four put in a lot of work to make this fundraiser as successful as it is. It has become the most lucrative fundraiser for the school, earning about $21,000 each year. Thank you also to all who purchased tickets, sold tickets, and who took part in Friday night's festivities.

Morning Prayer (11/20/13) Carroll Catholic School begins its day with the following morning prayer. It is said each day by a different student and reflects the attitude we hope students possess throughout the day.
Lord Jesus,
we invite you into our classroom today.
Bless our minds and fill them
with knowledge and wonder about your world.
Bless our hands as they become your hands
of care and thoughtfulness to others.
Open our eyes to all our education offers us each day,
and help us learn your ways.
Fill our mouths with kind words
that show appreciation to our teachers,
classmates, and friends.
Forgive us when we forget that you are our guest.
Thank you for dwelling in our hearts,
our classroom, and our school
with your spirit, grace, and love.
May we serve you with our learning,
and love what we do in your name.
We ask all of this through you,
our greatest teacher of all.
Amen.

Military "Service" (11/7/13) There is an excellent article in The Catholic Post about Father Jeffrey Laible, pastor at Holy Family Parish and for the Roman Catholic community in Logan County. The article details Father Laible's work with wounded servicemen and women and includes some very poignant excerpts from his personal journals. The article can be found at http://www.cdop.org/post/PostArticle.aspx?ID=3130.
As Veteran's Day approaches, the students and staff of Carroll Catholic School would like to express our appreciation to Father Laible for his service to our country, as well as our appreciation to all active military personnel and veterans.

School Club (10/31/13) I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight the good work done by School Club, your parent organization at CCS. School Club has been a part of Carroll School since it opened and has been responsible for the Christmas Bazaar for nearly as long. The Christmas Bazaar is the school's oldest fundraiser and one of the biggest throughout the year. The proceeds from the Bazaar, as well as from other School Club activities (Box Tops for Education, Market Day, Culver's Day), benefit the school in a host of ways you may not realize: bus transportation for field trips, fresh fruit at lunch, classroom supplies, teacher appreciation, Reading Counts incentives, Skate Night pizza, Back to School Potluck. In addition, School Club has funded larger purchases, such as the sign on Fifth Street, folding chairs, laminator, the fence along Third Street, playground equipment, and contributions to the school's general fund.
Being a parents organization, School Club cannot sustain its great work without the continued involvement of parents. The current School Club officers, Peggy Morrow, Kari Adams, Leslie Singleton, Amy Peyres, and Amber Young, provide excellent leadership and would welcome your involvement, ideas, and energy. Being part of School Club is a great way to take ownership in your child’s school and to get to know better your fellow CCS families.

Honor Roll (10/24/13) The first quarter honor roll is out and I am please to report that nearly seventy-percent of CCS students are represented. This is testimony to the combined efforts of our students, teachers, and families. Many students were within tenths or hundredths of a grade point of being on the honor roll or moving to the next higher column. The breakdown for honor roll is High Honors with a grade point average of 4.75-5.0, Honors from 4.5 to 4.74, and Honorable Mention from 4.0 to 4.49.
Beyond the number of students on the honor roll, I am pleased to report that one-hundred percent of CCS students are honorable students!

Religious Schools, Family Dinner, & Drug Use (10/21/13) At the outset of Red Ribbon Week, where students and schools focus on staying drug free, it is a good opportunity to look at two forces that will greatly influence the student: faith and family.
The National Center on Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse (www.casacolumbia.org) at Columbia University has published dozens of studies on the impact of substance abuse on society, as well as ways that individuals, particularly children, might avoid involvement with drugs and alcohol. The studies repeatedly identify faith and family as the foremost positive influences in a child's life. Religious schools help to shelter students from exposure to harmful substances, and these students are less likely to abuse drugs and to be negatively impacted by related issues, such as stress and poor self-image. However, the effect of attending a religious school only goes so far, and its effectiveness is substantially increased when a student attends religious services with his or her family on a regular basis.
Another place where family influences the choices children make is at the dinner table. Numerous CASA studies have stressed the impact of a family eating dinner together at least five times a week. This brief time spent together allows for issues to be discussed and relationships among family members to be strengthened.
A complete list of CASA studies and reports may be found at http://www.casacolumbia.org/templates/publications_reports.aspx.

"Bulletin Board Faculty" (10/10/13) The awesome bulletin boards you see in the lobby are courtesy of the "bulletin board faculty": Jennifer Craig, Colleen Roate, and Melanie Welch. For the past two school years, the bulletin boards have focused on a specific book or series of books. The ladies have also done a bulletin board in a classroom. Last year, it was Mr. Kocka's Civil War Timeline. Look for their latest bulletin board outside of Mrs. Sharp's PreK classroom.

Reading Fanatics (9/30/13) Several years ago, I passed along this link to parents, but I feel it is worth bringing attention to it again. It is an excellent article by author James Patterson about how to get children to be less reluctant readers.
A reluctance to read is often more true of boys than girls, but there is no reason why every child can't be an engaged reader. There are millions of articles and books on every subject imaginable, and there is something of interest out there for every reader. It doesn't have to be classical literature, but if it is engaging and relevant, a child will read it.
A lot of research supports the benefit of reading 20 minutes a day with your child. Often this interaction is encouraged up until kindergarten or to when the child becomes a more proficient reader, say, in second or third grade. However, older children can benefit from reading with an adult, even reading aloud with them. It reinforces the idea that reading is necessary to present understanding and to future success. Also, adults can model what proper reading should sound like, demonstrating fluency and emphasis. Acquiring these abilities can take reading from a mechanical activity to one that is more clearly understood and more entertaining. And what child doesn't want or need to be entertained?

Charles Carroll (9/30/13) If you've ever noticed the painting in the lobby, you know that the school was named after Charles Carroll. The painting has hung in its present location since the school opened in 1961.
Charles Carroll was a wealthy Maryland planter and an early advocate of American independence from England. He was the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, and he was the last-surviving signer when he died in 1832, at the age of 95.
It is reputed that the First Amendment right of religious freedom was written in part in appreciation of Carroll's financial support during the Revolutionary War.

Baseball & Basketball (9/25/13) I'd like to congratulate our baseball team on a well-played season. The team finished with a record of 8 wins and 5 losses. This was the first year that Zion Lutheran School in Mt. Pulaski joined our athletic co-op in baseball. The co-op also includes Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln and New Holland-Middletown Elementary. Coach Perry Groves took over as head coach this season, and he was assisted by Coach Pat Singleton. Thank you to our coaches and parents for all of your efforts in making the season a success for our students.
Girls basketball opens the season on Thursday, September 26 with a game at Blessed Sacrament School in Springfield. CCS will host its annual girls BB tournament beginning next Monday, September 30, and continuing throughout the week. The team increased its pool of talented players through the addition of Zion Lutheran School (Lincoln) to the girls BB co-op, joining CCS and NHM. Coach Ray Treuthart has moved from assistant to head coach this season, and will be assisted by Coach Tricia Goldsberry.

The team increased its pool of talented players through the addition of Zion Lutheran School (Lincoln) to the girls BB co-op, joining CCS and NHM. Coach Ray Treuthart has moved from assistant to head coach this season, and will be assisted by Coach Tricia Goldsberry.
Hayden Sanborn Eagle Scout Project (9/6/13) On behalf of the school, I would like to express my appreciation to Hayden Sanborn, his family, and his fellow Boy Scouts for their work on his Eagle Scout project. The group of Scouts led by Hayden operated with professionalism and efficiency as they prepped and painted all of the 2nd floor coatracks. The coatracks look great and will serve the students of Carroll Catholic for years to come.
Dedication of "Brock's Awesome Swings" (9/4/13) This morning, the school and family and friends of the Morrow's dedicated the playground swings in memory of Brock Endres. Brock was a 2007 graduate of Carroll School, and brother to Brandon (Class of 2004), Luke (6th grade), and Rachel (3rd grade). While his passing this past spring was extremely sad, his awesome swings bring joy to a lot of children.
Father Laible opened the dedication with a prayer (see below). Greg Morrow's comments were especially poignant when he told of the great education Brock received at CCS and of his dream to be a doctor, one he was actively pursuing at Saint Louis University. Mr. Morrow then reminded our students to always value their education at Carroll.

Heavenly Father,
As we gather together today, we thank you for Brock Endres in whose memory these swings have been
provided.
We thank you for Brock’s parents, Greg and Peggy Morrow, who have raised their children to know You and to serve You.
Thank you to all who contributed toward these swings and for all of the hands that put together and put in place these swings this summer.
Rachel and Mrs. Morrow swinging
Father, bless each of them, and bless the children who are drawn to these swings.
Through their joy and laughter, we recognize Your presence and Brock’s.
Lord, we dedicate these swings in Brock’s memory and to Your enjoyment and honor.
Amen.

Lincoln Public Library - Summer Reading Award (9-3-13) Congratulations to the CCS students who took part in the summer reading program offer by Lincoln Public Library. In the spring, the school had established a goal of reading 800 books over summer break. The 30 Carroll students who participated in the program greatly surpassed the goal by reading a total of 1,032 books! Great job! The trophy recognizing your accomplishment will be placed in the school library next to the many others students have earned over the years.
Father Larry Snyder (8-23-13) I would like to congratulate Father Larry Snyder on his 25th ordination jubilee. Father Snyder graduated from Carroll Catholic in 1964. I would also like to recognize the great work of Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA),with Father Snyder as the organization's president. Catholic Charities works to counter the effects of poverty for over 10 million Americans every year. In addition to his leadership at CCUSA, in 2009, Father Snyder was appointed by President Obama to head the President's Advisory Council of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
Carroll Catholic School counts itself fortunate to call Father Larry Snyder one of its own. He provides a model of service and compassion for which current CCS students may aspire.
